The following position announcement has been cross-posted. Please excuse
any duplication.

Position: Special Collections Librarian, The New York Academy of Medicine

Date of Vacancy: November 1, 1994

Duties: Provide reference service for a collection containing
approximately 49,000 volumes in the history of medicine, science, and
other health-related disciplines. Of these, rare materials dating from
1700 BC to AD 1800 number nearly 35,000 volumes. The collection also
contains manuscripts, illustrations, photographs, portraits, ephemera,
and archival collections. This position will: assist with retrieval and
shelving of materials; process interlibrary loans; handle orders for
photographic services and requests for permission to reproduce materials
from the colleciton; participate in the exhibition program and public
outreach activities of the department.
Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Prior
experience in a rare book or special collections library; knowledge of
specialized printed and online reference sources for rare books,
manuscripts, and archives. Working knowledge of Latin and one or more
western European languages. Excellent oral and written communication
skills; strong interpersonal skills. Preferred: Experience in planning
and installing rare book exhibits. Proficiency in online bibliographic
searching, microcomputers, and use of the Internet. An additional
advanced degree in the humanities or social sciences.

Salary: $30,000 with excellent benefits
