The University of Iowa Conservation Dept. announces a 1995 Mellon
Foundation sponsered workshop, "Lessons and Techniques from the
History of Conservation." This workshop will explore some neglected
book structures and methods from the long history of the care of books.
Specific topics include: the scientific study of paper deterioration,
1890 -1940, silking and other neglected methods of page repair;
account bookbinding and its influence; box styles outside the clamshell;
the training and experience of protoconservators of the 30's through
the '50s. Workshop Leader: Tom Conroy. Date: April 10-14, 1995.
