Maureen:   I use a product called "Stitch Witchery", available at any fabric
store, in combination with a backing piece of Japanese paper. Make a
sandwich of your fabric, (any cotton, linen or silk), then the Stitch
Witchery, then the Japanese paper. Use a hot iron on it and, Voila!, it's of
a piece and you've used no water or paste. Also,  you have the advantage of
using any nice fabric you find in any fabric store!
