Re: ? paper size (fwd)

Why does "standard typing paper," i.e., American letter-size paper
measure 8 1/2" x 11"?

A leaf of American letter-size paper is one-quarter of a sheet of one
of the standard sizes of American-manufactured paper, 34" x 44". (See,
for instance, _Glaister's Glossary of the Book_ (1979), s.v. "paper
sizes," for a table of the standard sizes of American-manufactured
paper.)
