I would like to announce that the exhibit:
"The Book as Art: Building a Foundation"
is now open. The exhibit is at http://web.syr.edu/~pdverhey, in the Book
Arts Gallery. Please visit us.
This exhibit culminates the work of 2 classes from Syracuse University's
School of Visual and Performing Arts. The actual pieces are on display in
the 1st floor cases in Bird Library and in Special Collections on the 6th
Floor. Objects on the 1st floor can be viewed during regular library hours.
The 6th floor is only open from 9-5 Monday through Friday.
A presentation will be given by some of the students and faculty members to
the Syracuse University Library Associates on April 11 at 4:00pm in Bird
Library's Class of 1916 room on the 1st floor.
The first class 3-Dimensional Design, taught by Claire Harootunian,
interpreted written texts to create their book objects.
The second class, 2-Dimensional Design taught by Gail Hoffman, created their
own "books" based on the concept of time.
Terry Keenen, Curator in the Department of Special Collections and Peter
Verheyen, Conservation Libarian, in the Preservation Department both gave
presentations to this class, Terry on the history of the book and Peter on
book structure and binding.
