Duplicate Book Auction

The Special Collections Library at the University of Michigan is holding
a Duplicate Book Mail Auction, taking place now until Thursday, November
7, 1996. Over 1,000 lots are included, representing an accumulation of
duplicate titles that has been building up in the Special Collections
Library over a span of several decades. Many were part of donations of
entire private collections, which inevitably contained some titles we
already owned. The donors generously allowed us to retain the items for
sales such as this to benefit the Library. Proceeds from this sale will
be used to support future acquisitions for the Special Collections
Library.

The 1,017 lots in the sale catalog reflect the wide collecting base of
the Special Collections Library itself. Well over a third of the titles
are literary. American and English literature are best represented, but
there is also a large selection of Classical literature (both in the
original languages and in English translation), as well as French,
German, Italian, Slavic, and Spanish literature. Other large subject
categories include, BOOK ARTS (e.g., the history and art of printing,
bookbinding, book collecting), EARLY ENGLISH IMPRINTS (STC and Wing
titles), EARLY CONTINENTAL IMPRINTS (one incunabulum, 16th- and
17th-century titles), EARLY SCIENCE (16th to 19th centuries), FINE AND
PRIVATE PRESS BOOKS, and accounts of VOYAGES, TRAVELS, AND EXPLORATION.
