so precious a foundation - exhibit @ Grolier Club

An exhibit worth seeing that's still up through November 23 at the Grolier
Club * 47 E. 60th St. NYC. "so precious a foundation" shows over 100 books
and manuscripts from the Leander van Ess collection at the Burke Library of
Union Theological Seminary. It shows the focus of van Ess's interest in
collecting liturgical texts while commenting on the various modes of
production & continuing use of these materials. The curator, Milton McC.
Gatch, Director of the Burke Library draws the viewer's attention to these
physical aspects of the books - use, wear, materials, stamps of ownership.
This codilogical approach to curating shows one collection of books that
were amassed for their intellectual usefulness - and how that use impacted
& impacts on them still.

van Ess is best known to the modern book world for his sale of MSS and
incunabula to Sir Thomas Phillipps. This material includes many incunables
as well as MSS dating back to the XIth C. The case descriptions and display
of bindings, typography, calligraphy and other physical evidence will be of
interest to craftspeople and students of the book.

The Grolier Club hrs. are 10:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. Monday through Saturday.
