THE SOCIETY OF SCRIBES HOLIDAY FAIR
Sunday, December 1, 1995. 11:00am - 4:00pm.
Loews New York Hotel, 569 Lexington Avenue @ 51st St.
Embassy Ballroom A (Mezzanine Level)
Admission: $3.00 for members, $5.00 general public.

Had enough turkey? Give yourself the gift of beautiful letters at the
Society of Scribes Holiday Fair.  Calligraphy is an ages-old craft that
continues to enthrall people even in this era of the internet. Watch gifted
artists demonstrate calligraphy, papermaking and bookbinding. Do your
holiday shopping early. Numerous unique gifts are available for sale:
Calligraphic greeting cards, fountain pens, handmade paper, origami, and
hand-bound books are just a few of the gems you will find here.

Observe talented artists perform calligraphy and related crafts.
Demonstrations will include Hebrew lettering by Ted Kadin, quill cutting
with David Nichols,  flower painting with Shari Schwarz, and gilded letters
by Karen Gorst. Watch while Melissa Titone cuts paper in the style of
tarjeteria, then see how to make polymer clay jewelry as Patte Leathe
demonstrates. Observe Dorothy Nassar make origami or listen to Shannen
Brock & Lori Tampa of Carriage House Paper describe the process of
papermaking by hand. In addition, Will Farrington will show how to work
with colored pencils and ink on paper, Barry Morentz will demonstrate
boxmaking and Jane Murphy will decorate eggs in the Ukrainian style known
as pysanka.

The New York Chapter of the Guild of Bookworkers will have a table set up
with bookbinding samples & information about the GBW.

Vendors will include: Paper & Ink Books - calligraphy supplies, including
pens, ink, paper, brushes, color; Diana Chan - calligraphic cards; The
Gabriel Guild - illuminated lettering supplies; Joan Kopchik Paper  -
handmade paper;  Artifex Librorum - hand-bound books, calendars and photo
albums; and Del Rosa Marshall - origami.

Raffles will be held throughout the day  for  unique calligraphic items and
other beautiful objects. Bring your children and your parents - there's
something for everyone - refreshments will be available throughout the day.
