NY Chapter Guild of Book Workers Events

A couple of NY Chapter GBW events:

PRINTED MATTER TOUR AND TALK
In conjunction with Giftland V: Democra$y, a holiday exhibition/sale of
affordable art works,
NY Chapter GBW members and friends are invited for a tour and talk at
Printed Matter at 11:30am on Saturday, December 14. Bookstore Managager Max
Schumann will give a brief history of artists' books and of the store
(celebrating its 20th anniversary). He will also point out some of the
innovative book structures and designs, and answere any questions about the
store's submission policy. For those of you who have never been to Printed
Matter, this will be a great introduction, and for those of you who are
familiar with it, get to know it better! Founded in 1976, Printed Matter
is the country's largest retailer and destributor of artists' books and
related publications. Located in Soho (77 Wooster St.), it carries over
6,000 titles by 2,500 artists, ranging in price from 50 cents to $1,500. The
bulk of this inventory consists of artists' books -- that is, books by
visual artists which are themselves works of art. They also carry
periodicals that include art for the page, some reference books that offer a
critical or historical dimension to the field of artists' books, and a
selection of works published in audio and video by artists. Its program also
includes: running a public reading room; a free consultancy service;
organizing a range of events including book launches, readings and video
screenings; organizing exhibitions, and talks by artists and critics. A
non-profit organization, Printed Matter's mission is to facilitate and
encourage the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of artists'
publications.

GLADYS BROOKS BOOK AND PAPER CONSERVATION LABORATORY OPEN HOUSE
AND HOLIDAY PARTY
On Wednesday, December 18th, at 4pm, the staff of the Gladys Brooks Book and
Paper Conservation Laboratory at The New York Academy of Medicine, invites all
METRO region preservation and conservation library staff, the New York
Chapter Guild of Book Workers members and friends to an Open House and
Holiday Party in their newly renovated Laboratory. Head Conservator Elaine
Schlefer, and Conservators Susan Martin and Solveig Schumann will exhibit the
seven techniques Elaine demonstrated at the GBW Standards of Excellence Seminar
last year in Tuscaloosa: the Horton Humidifier, vellum stretching, a board
reatachment technique, pamphlet binding, one-piece post binding, paper pulp
mending, and a method for binding single sheets, using folded Japanese tissue
hinges. Although time doesn't allow for demonstrations of all these techniques,
descriptions and directions will be available, and we will be happy to answer
questions. We will also show recent and in-progress projects, and give you a
tour of our new lab. There will be food and drinks and plenty of good company
and conversation. Come celebrate the holidays with us!
For those who can come early, there will be a tour of the Malloch Rare
Book Room, at 3:30.
The New York Academy of Medicine is located at 1216 Fifth Ave. at 103rd St.
and our lab is on the fifth floor, Room 550.  RSVP by phone: 212.822-7363;
or email: sschumann@nyam.org.
