edge marbling

To Butch Wingo

Have you tried gum arabic? I do not make colors from printing ink powders
as you do, so can't vouch for how it will work with them, but gum arabic
does not necessarily need the cooking step, at least I have never cooked
it. Some people first make it into a "gum-arabic water". Being primarily
self-taught, I never knew I might have to do this so never did, and it
worked well. My colors keep for a very long time without going bad, just
how long I cannot say..... I've had some in the past for close to a year.
The gum should be available in art stores as a powder, or perhaps a ready
made liquid which may be easier if you are hand-grinding.

Have you tried mixing your current gum and the desired amount of water with
a little alcohol? This may dissolve the lumps fairly quickly and you may
only need to heat it briefly to thicken.

Do you do edge-marbling for other people? I sometimes get a request for
this, but will not do it on anyone's rare book, as it would be the one book
I would mess up on, no doubt. If you have a phone number I can refer these
people to you if you wish.

Just curious whether you get very traditional looking results with your
printing ink powders.

Sincerely..........Iris Nevins

I am currently using a Karayah gum base for my marbling.I mix my own
colors using printing ink powders. The gum is cooked in a copper
jacketed kettle for 7 hours with a few other ingredients. This is a
long process, yet the gum has about a 45 day shelf life w/o
refrigeration. I wish to continue making my colors, but I would love to
find an easier gum base.Where do I look?
