Re: BOOK_ARTS-L Digest - 24 Mar 1997 to 25 Mar 1997

Re: ART versus CRAFT: At the 1983 international conference of the
International Assoc. of Papermakers & Paper Artists in Kyoto Robert
Rauchenburg and David Hockney were members of a panel when someone asked
whether ANYONE could make something, hang it on the wall and call it "ART".
Rauchenburg said "SURE!" Hockney vehemently disagreed. He said he wanted
the artist to "depict" something. Asked to explain "depiction" he said
"...the artist has to mess it up somehow!" and later, informally he said
"...the fine artist and the fine craftsperson know where the line is
drawn."!!!<j>
