Book exhibit in Brunswick, Maine

I'd like to invite anyone who finds themselves in southern Maine to visit
Bowdoin and see the current exhibit now in the Bowdoin College Library.
The following is our news release on the display:

Rare Books and Bindings Exhibit Opens at the Bowdoin College Library

A new exhibit of rare or unusual books and fine bindings has
opened in the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library at Bowdoin College. Entitled
"Blissful Books and Bindings," the exhibit features volumes from the
Susan Dwight Bliss Collection.

The Bliss Collection, donated to the College in the early 1950s,
contains approximately 1,200 volumes relating to the fine arts, travel,
and French and English history and literature. It contains many examples
of fine and elaborate European bindings by such masters as Riviere and
Son, Chambolle-Duru, Zaehnsdorf, Marius-Michel, Gruel, Bradstreet,
Taffin, Prideaux and others. The collection was started by Miss Blisss
father, George T. Bliss, a New York City banker who died in 1901, and
continued by Susan Dwight Bliss herself. She generously donated them to
Bowdoin, together with the paneling and furniture of the Hubbard Hall
room in which they are housed.

The display is divided into two parts: the bindings and the
texts. The former includes twenty-seven examples of the binders art,
from plain calf cases to elaborately inlaid and gilt-tooled morocco
bindings -- of special interest are two volumes in which ivory miniatures
are framed on the front and back covers. The texts include approximately
thirty titles, dating from the 18th through 20th centuries, ranging from
Thomas Chippendales The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director to The
Franciscan Mission Architecture of Alta California and Owen Joness The
Grammar of Ornament.

The exhibit is open to the public during regular library hours:
Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5:00, through the end of August; Monday
through Saturday 8:30 to midnight, Sunday 10 to midnight, starting in
September.
