I heard the same thing at a recent book arts list. I heard that there were some
sort of adhesive-eating bacteria that causes the stuff to go rancid and lose
its adhesive qualities. There was some rancid PVA at the class and it had a very distinctive and pungent odor.
I must say that I've never heard anyone else mention this until now.

I had been told that Colophon had pulled the PVA because of safety concerns
(something about turning into formaldehyde [sp?] when it sits for a length
of time...). Is the product being reintroduced the same stuff? Is there a
way to check the adhesive to see if it's "fresh"?
