Besides the grammatical aspects of quote marks, there is also the typogra=
phic=0Anicety of "hanging" opening quotes in the left margin=97usually in=
 poetry=97to=0Aavoid the appearance of an indented line:
 "Mary had a little lamb,
 its fleece was white as snow."

"Mary had a little lamb,
  its fleece was white as snow."

One respondent mentioned the MLA style book on this question. I would als=
o=0Arecommend the Chicago Manual of Style (U. of Chicago Press) which jus=
t about=0Acovers everything "stylish," including citations from the Inter=
net (and=0Awhether to put punctuation inside or outside of a closing quot=
e).
