Re: BOOK_ARTS-L Digest - 13 Apr 1998 to 14 Apr 1998

Tom Larque's post reminded me of the story of Dard Hunter's first
special job for the Roycroft Press which was a unique volume in memorial
to the purchasers husband. He prepared the design, did the typesetting
and printing and when prepared to begin the binding presented the
greiving widdow with several options as to leathers. Her reply was to
provide a beautifully supple square of leather from her baggage. Hunter
immediately approved and asked what sort of hide it was . . . . Needless
to say he hoped there would never be a "second edition" when he was told
it was the tanned skin of her late husband's back!
