Book Repairer
San Francisco Public Library

The San Francisco Public Library invites applications for a vacant
full-time (40 hours/week) position in class 7416, Book Repairer in
the Preservation Unit of Technical Service Monday through Friday,
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to be filled by a Reassignment or Permanent
Appointment

Note: The position is being announced simultaneously as a
Reassignment in the Library's Personnel Office Notes. Persons
seeking a reassignment to this position, who are otherwise
qualified, will be given preference in the selection process in
accordance with the terms and conditions of the Collective
Bargaining Agreement covering Reassignments, between the City and
SEIU, Local 790.

Duties and Responsibilities: Under direct supervision performs
conservation treatments on books and library materials. Performs
hinge repairs; tightens, recases, rebacks and resews; performs
textblock treatments; paper repairs, tips pages or errata, hinges in
pages, plates and foldouts; hinging or inserting pockets,
photocopying replacement leaves; pamphlet binding of thin materials;
replaces mylar jackets; performs air drying of wet library
materials; assists in disaster response; encapsulates; sorts
incoming materials and specifies appropriate treatment; pulls
damaged materials from stacks; recognizes rare or highly valuable
materials; interacts with library staff and outside callers;
maintains individual supplies and cleanliness of work area; records
monthly statistics and performs other duties as assigned. $ 30,876 -
$37,401 (Annually).

Minimum Qualifications:

    1.  One year of experience in binding, conservation,
        preservation or restoration of books and similar printed
        material and

    2.  Ability to type 25 wpm and use computer keyboard. (An
        applicant's signature on the 7416 application form will
        serve to self-certify that the applicant has the ability to
        type 25 wpm and use the computer keyboard. A typing test may
        be administered by the Library. Failure to demonstrate the
        required ability may result in waiver or termination of
        appointment.) and

    3.  Ability to lift and move 30 pounds (A lift test may be
        administered by the Library.)

Desirable Qualifications:

    1.  Working familiarity with Library Binding Institute standards
        relating to the binding of library materials.

    2.  Knowledge of Library Book and Paper Conservation practices
        as used in the field of library and book repair.

    3.  Ability to work independently and to meet quality standards
        and productivity goals.

Note: College coursework or equivalent training in book binding,
conservation, preservation, or restoration may be substituted for
the required experience prorated as follows: six semester/nine
quarter units equal one year of experience.

Reassignment Request: Submit SFPL Reassignment Request Form to
Library Personnel Office. Current employees of the San Francisco
Public Library who meet the Minimum Qualifications (MQ's) based on
their SFPL experience need not submit verification. If the MQ's are
based on outside experience the outside experience must be verified

Experience Verification: Verification of all experience needed to
qualify must be submitted together with the application.
Verification must be on the employer's letterhead and must show the
name of the applicant, job title(s), duties performed, dates of
service, and must be signed by the employer. Verification may be
waived if impossible to obtain. Applicants must submit a signed
statement with the application explaining why verification cannot be
obtained. Waivers may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Failure to submit verification or request for waiver may result in
the application being rejected

Mailed applications must be postmarked by 5:00 PM. May 15, 1998. If
the number of qualified applications received by the filing is
insufficient, the date may be extended.
