On November 4th and 5th, the Book Arts Program at Mills College will
sponsor the Third Annual Charlene Garry Symposium.  On November 5th,
renowned Bay Area artist and scholar Frances Butler will present her
lecture Books For Children, Books For Adults: The Impact of a Century of
Fluid Structure on the Book Form at 7pm in the Danforth Auditorium, Aron
Art Center.  A reception will follow the lecture in the Mills College Art
Museum, with music by Bouche.
        Childrens Book Illustration: A contemporary perspective is the
title of the seminar on Wednesday, November 4th. The panel discussion will
be moderated by Daphne Muse, writer, editor and curriculum consultant.
Panel members include Ms. Butler and author/illustrators Thacher Hurd,
Anne Siberell and Ruth McGurk. The seminar will be held at 4pm in the
Bender Room, Carnegie Hall, with refreshments and informal tours of the
book arts studios following the discussion.
        The Heller Room of the Olin Library at Mills will feature an
exhibition of historical childrens books from its collection to accompany
the symposium. The exhibition is curated by Special Collections librarian
Janice Braun. The exhibition will be ongoing through 1998.
        All events are free and open to the public. The Thursday evening
lecture and reception are wheelchair accessible. For directions to Mills
