announcement to the attention of anyone who might or should be
interested. As the announcement indicates, Iowa City has a great
many book-related activities, and this is a position which offers
an interesting range of opportunities, including formal or informal
relationships with students and faculty in the Iowa Center for the
Book.

                       Position Announcement
                  The University of Iowa Libraries
                       University Conservator

Position description: The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking an
accomplished and energetic conservator to serve as Head of the Conservation
Department. The Conservator provides leadership and strategic direction
in the conservation treatment of special collections materials for the
Special Collections Department, Iowa Women’s Archives, and John Martin
Rare Book Room. The Conservator also provides administrative and operational
guidance for the Conservation Department. Duties include examination,
assessment, planning, and executing paper conservation treatments; planning
and direction of collections maintenance activities for bound materials
in the collections; supervision of 1 FTE apprentice as well as occasional
interns/volunteers and .33 FTE student assistants; assisting in the
formulation of priorities, procedures, standards and policies as
they relate to an extensive book and paper collection; working with
library staff in the design and production of exhibits; and providing
technical expertise and professional advice and education to the staff,
other institutions, and the public. The Conservator also identifies and
guides new initiatives involving technologies in the activities of the
unit; assists the Book Repair unit, which provides preservation services
to the circulating collections under the direction of the Preservation
Librarian; and, depending on his or her interests, collaborates with the
Center for the Book in teaching classes in bookbinding and on other aspects
of developing book studies programs at the University.

The Conservation Department: The Conservation Department is part of
the Preservation Department which encompasses five areas: Conservation,
Marking, Binding, Book Repair, and Reformatting. The Department
provides conservation services for materials from the Department of
Special Collections, which includes the University Archives, Iowa Women’s
 Archives and John Martin Rare Book Room.

The Conservation lab consists of a 1,700 sq. ft. all-purpose, well-
equipped space. It includes materials storage spaces, fume hood, suction
table, two large board shears, 3 finishing presses, dedicated deionized
-recalcified water system, large wash sinks, drying racks for paper,
ultrasonic welder, binding benches, and tables for flat paper work.

Qualifications:
Required: Graduation from an accredited conservation program and
significant work experience or equivalent education and experience in
book and paper conservation; extensive knowledge of conservation theory,
chemistry, and practices; thorough knowledge of book and paper history,
materials and construction; demonstrably well-developed skills in the
examination, evaluation, treatment, and documentation of library and
archival collections; experience in project planning and management,
supervision, and excellent interpersonal skills. The candidate should
also demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills;
a willingness to share knowledge with colleagues and trainees; possess
qualities of teamwork, patience, adaptability, good humor, and the
ability to work with other staff in a spirit of cooperation and
mutual respect.

Preferred: Completion of a formal training program, with a graduate
degree or certificate in conservation and a minimum of three to five
years supervised professional experience after training as a book and
paper conservator. Experience in a research library setting and
knowledge of production methods.

Salary and Appointment: Appointment rank and salary will be based
on relevant experience and educational background and will be
competitive with peer institutions. The University offers an attractive

The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa Library
system consists of the Main Library (including the Information Arcade)
and 11 branch libraries (Art, Music, Business, and the Sciences), the
largest of which is Hardin Library for the Health Sciences which
includes the Information Commons, an electronic classroom facility.
With over 3 million volumes, the collections of the UI Libraries
rank 30 out of 107 in the Association of Research Libraries. The
University of Iowa Libraries makes use of a NOTIS-based automated
system called OASIS. The University is a member of the OCLC and the
Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). The Libraries provides
a program of support for professional development activities and its
staff members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.

Environment - The University and Iowa City: A major research and teaching
institution, The University of Iowa offers recognized programs in a
wide variety of areas. The University consists of a faculty of some
1,700 serving over 28,000 students, over 9,000 of whom are registered
in graduate and professional degree programs. The University of Iowa
employs over 15,000 permanent full-time and part-time staff. Iowa City
is a community with excellent educational, recreational, and cultural
advantages, and is readily accessible via interstate highways and a
major airport only 30 minutes away.
