PRESERVATION AWARENESS WEEK
SMITH COLLEGE, NORTHAMPTON, MA
MARCH 29 - APRIL 1, 1999

The Smith College Libraries will host a four-day program, free and
open to the public, featuring a series of workshops, films, panel
discussions, demonstrations and exhibitions, to address the care
and handling of personal and library collections. For a full

The week's events start Monday morning, March 29, with an Open House
and Book Clinic, featuring demonstrations by and consultations with
professional bookbinders (Dea Sasso, Barbara Blumenthal, Bill Street
and Peter Geraty) and Smith College archivists. The public is
encouraged to bring books, photographs and family papers for free
advice on their care and storage.

On Wednesday, March 31, guest speaker Jane Hedberg, Preservation
Librarian at Wellesley College, will address the role of preservation
in the overall mission of libraries. On April 1, Gregor
Trinkaus-Randall, Collections Management/Preservation Specialist at
the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, will discuss
disaster preparedness and library security. Films, panel discussions,
and bookbinding demonstrations will be offered throughout the week.

All events take place in Neilson Library, Smith College, Northampton
Massachusetts.
