Helen Hiebert

Basic Papermaking, with Helen Hiebert
Fee: $35
One session class offered every month: Tuesday, April 6; Thursday, May 13;
Thursday, June 17, 6:30-9:30pm

This workshop will give participants a general overview of the papermaking
process. Students learn how to pull sheets of paper and will get an
introduction to various papermaking techniques. A lecture/demonstration will
be followed by plenty of time for hands-on experimentation.


Papermaking Techniques, with Helen Hiebert
Fee: $130
4 consecutive Tuesdays: May 4, 11, 18, and 25, 6:30 - 9pm

Papermaking as an art medium is the focus of this hands-on course. Students
will become familiar with the entire process of making paper, from preparing
pulp to making and drying sheets. A variety of papermaking techniques will be
explored, including making paper with plants, coloring, watermarking,
laminating, embedding and working three-dimensionally with paper pulp.


Paper and Fabric Marbling, with Galen Berry
Fee: $75
Sunday, April 25, 12-5pm

Remember the beautiful multicolored patterned papers you often see in the
bindings of old books?  They are lots of fun to make and it's really easy. You
can use the papers for gift wrap, bookbinding, covering boxes, picture
matting, lampshades, placemats, origami, collage, and more. Marbled cloth can
be made into scarves, ties and clothes. Participants will learn 10 of the
traditional patterns (such as Peacock, Nonpareil, French curl, Stone marble,
Spanish wave, etc.) and how to prepare and use all the necessary materials
such as carrageenan, alum and oxgall. Each participant will make 15 to 20
marbled papers (10" x 12") and will also work on pieces of cotton fabric.

Galen Berry is a nationally known marbler. His work is sold in many stores
nationwide, and he does regular work for the Smithsonian and the Library of
Congress. He teaches marbling around the country and resides in Oklahoma.


Memory Album, with Patricia Grass
Fee: $75 + $10 materials fee
Saturday, May 15, 10am - 4pm

Learn to make a sewn album with pages that will hold standard 3"x5" photos,
pocket pages for tucking in odds and ends, and blank pages for writing or
drawing.The style of sewing results in a book that opens flat.

watermarking, laminating and embedding. A lecture/demonstration will be
followed by plenty of time for hands-on experimentation.


Compost Papermaking, with Helen Hiebert
Fee: $75
Saturday, June 12, 10am - 4pm

Make paper from could-be compost! Learn how to make paper from various plants
found in the kitchen, garden or countryside. Papers will be created from plant
parts  such as onion skins, iris leaves and corn stalks, and the possibilities
of mixing plant fibers with pre-processed natural fibers, such as abaca and
cotton, will be explored. Students will also make vegetable papyrus sheets
from slices of turnips, onions, and squash.
