Upcoming MCBA Events



On May 21, 1999 the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers will
commence their annual meeting at Minnesota Center for Book Arts.  The
center will host an Open House on Friday, May 21, from 6-9 PM, for the
public to meet the Guild members and view their work.  MCBA will also
host two lectures by Guild members Annie Tremmel Wilcox and Gabrielle
Fox.  Please join the us for these special events.

A Book Arts Life
Lecturer: Annie Tremmel Wilcox

Annie Tremmel Wilcox, author of A Degree of Mastery: A Journey Through
Book Arts Apprenticeship and Co-chair of the Midwest Chapter of the
Guild of Book Workers, will present a slide lecture on her life in the
book arts. Using treatment and personal slides, she will talk about how
she came to work in the book arts, her apprenticeship in rare book and
paper conservation with Bill Anthony, and how she came to write her book
about their time together.
This lecture is co-sponsored by New Rivers Press.

Miniature Binding: Structure & Design
Lecturer: Gabrielle Fox

Gabrielle Fox is from the US where she received a BA in English
Literature and Journalism before travelling to the UK to study
bookbinding. Fox has recently exhibited her bindings at the Barbican
Centre, London; Black Swan Books and New York Street Cafe, Kentucky;
Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Belgium; and in the Guild of Book Workers'
exhibition Abecedarium. This presentation will examine various
possibilities in the structure and design of miniatures bound by Fox and
other bookbinders and book artists, to inspire with the possibilities in
miniature, rather than the limitations.

Adhesives Workshop
Instructor: Cathleen Baker
Saturday, May 22, 12:30-5 PM
Fee: $43, $38.70 members*
This class will cover the properties, preparation, uses, and application
of the common adhesives used in making art, in bookbinding, in preparing
artwork for exhibition, and in conservation. These will include PVA,
starch pastes, animal glues, methyl cellulose, glue sticks, and
heat-seal adhesives. Anyone who uses adhesives will find this class
invaluable when determining which adhesive to use in a particular
situation. *This will not be a hands-on class.
