Position at Cornell University



This is a corrected and expanded re-posting for the position of
<bold>Assistant

Book Conservator </bold>at Cornell University Department of Preservation
and

Conservation.  The Department has a staff of 25, including three

professional conservators (for books, paper, and photographs
respectively),

a Conservation Liaison Specialist,  four conservation technicians, and
nine

preservation technicians.


Assistant Book Conservator:  Main Function.

Under the Book Conservator, the Assistant Book Conservator is
responsible

for the conservation treatment of rare and unique library materials,

generally those requiring individual treatment.  Performs complex

conservation treatment on rare/unique materials, consisting of:
analysis

and replication of historic structures, conservation of paper and
parchment

via aqueous and chemical treatment, re-sewing in a variety of styles,

leather and vellum rebinding/binding restoration, gold and blind
tooling.

Assists in the preparation of rare/unique materials for exhibition.

Assists  the Book Conservator in arranging workflow and treatment

identification with the Conservation Liaison and curatorial staff.

Participates in the general training and education, consultancy, and

internship  programs of the Department.  Works closely with other staff
of

the Department on overall conservation planning and program
development.


Knowledge/Experience Requirements.


Extensive knowledge of book and manuscript conservation techniques as

evidenced by: degree/diploma in conservation, apprenticeship completion

certificate, or other verifiable certification of advanced training and

education.  Minimum of two years experience beyond training.
Bachelor's

degree, with good oral and written communication skills.  Ability to
impart

knowledge to others.


Salary dependant upon level of experience but a minimum of $28,000.
