ARTISTıS BOOKS: STRUCTURE & CONTENT

A three-day WORKSHOP taught by Alicia Bailey and Laura Wait
Dates: Oct. 22,23,24. 9:30-4.
Location: Bookworks, 3358 Pecos St. Denver, CO 80211
Class Size: 7-8. Cost: $210 (GBW members), plus $25 for materials. ($235
for non-members)

This workshop will combine simple structures and creative design methods to
make artistic bookworks. The structures to be taught are especially useful
in situations where only one side of the paper is painted or printed, but a
two-sided page is desired. Writing and drawing exercises will help you
develop ideas and express unconscious creativity. Students will complete
the workshop with at least three models, and one or more artworks, and lots
of materials for future use. These structures do not require heavy
bookbinding equipment. No experience is required.

Day one: Structures by Alicia Bailey

Three structures will be made. All materials will be pre-cut.
1. An adaptation of a butterfly book that opens like a codex. This has an
exposed spine with two board covers, but can be made as a case binding.
2. Adaptation of a leporello (accordion) structure. This is made with a
combination of papers and single sheets rather than one long sheet. This
will have one or two removable spines.
3. Skewer binding. This is an adaptation of the wire binding and uses stiff
pages. It can be a codex or an accordion. This is most useful for larger books.

Day two: Developing ideas by Laura Wait

This day will include many different tools for finding and organizing your
ideas and methods to reach your unconscious creativity. We will do writing
and drawing exercises. Students should bring a pile of postcards, letters,
or sketches that they think could be made into a book.

Day three: Putting it all together by Alicia Bailey & Laura Wait

Drawing from the ideas developed during day two, each student will make one
or more unique books using structures introduced on day one. (Materials)
