There are lots of artists of all grades and types.
Some are good, most are not. A few are great.
In most cases, natural ability is the key, but this is not
enough.
Technique must be learned. An artist has to pay his dues.
Training is probably 90% of the battle in todays world.
Perseverance and dilligence is probably another 5%.
That is the purpose for art schools, apprenticeships, master
classes, etc.
Even the greatest natural ability will not allow an artist
to paint or sculpt or write or etch or bind or act or weave,
or cut gems or work wood, without knowledge of his craft.
He will be a lousy artist if he insists that has to reinvent
the wheel.
He can be a great artist if he can reinvent and carry
forward the work that came before him.

Not everyone can be a genius like Leonardo, but then
Leonardo was also an great engineer, a superb builder, and a
few other things as well. He certainly learned from his
predecessors.

The next time that you think that a surgeon has to be born
and not trained, I suggest that you have a few drinks before
you go under the knife.
