Disaster at National Library of Canada in Ottawa - Again

Sunday, February 27, 2000

A year after thousands of Canadian Official Publications were showered with water from a burst
pipe, the basement of the National Library in Ottawa has been deluged again; this time, the damaged
documents may not be so easily replaced.

A 30-year-old joint gave way on Sunday, flooding the Canadian history stacks, situated in the lower
basement with about three contimeters of water. More than 2,600 publications, described as "just
outside the mandate of rare book collection," are being frozen and hurriedly treated against the
threat of mould and mildew. Included among the casualties may be documents concerning the
Yukon gold rush and the Riel Rebellion (considered to be one of the most significant events of
Canadian history.)

Because the stacks are arranged topically, the chances of damage to items over a century old are
good."There are some late 1800s documents that are not really rare enough to be in the rare books
section but they are still worth a couple of hundred dollars [Canadian] and they would have to be
replaced," commented Michel Brisebois, rare books curator at the Library.
