Re: pulling your book from the show



Let's face it, most people do not know how to handle one-of-a-kind,
hand-made books-as-works-of-art, no less how to exhibit them in a manner
that facilitates their reading -- especially in a gallery situation.
It's smart to consider the display carefully when lending work for
exhibition. Designing the display yourself is a good solution.
Incorporating the display into the design of the work is even better.
But if the work is an intimate page-turner, something that communicates
within an arms length, it's not going to "read well" in a gallery or
museum situation anyway. Obviously, the ideal is when a viewer is
allowed to experience the work in his or her own time -- like when
you're there to hand it to them.

I've found sculptural bookworks fair a bit better, as they resemble
"art" in a way that galleries can understand. Most times no physical
interaction between the viewer and the art is needed for a complete
"reading" -- no muss, no fuss.  Shipping may be a problem, but one which
artists can have some control over.

Multiple bookworks are indeed the best way to go towards worry-free
exhibiting.  If it gets lost or damaged, hey, I got another one. Hey, I
got a ton of them -- under my bed, in the back of the closet -- because
we know the the only distribution artists' books get these days is in
pieces around the studio waiting for assembly when or if there happens
to be some interest.

So choose your venues and accept those invitations carefully, or make
one big book-as-retrospective that's tough as nails and will travel
everywhere and say everything you need to say.
