By far the worst enemy of books are library directors and their foul =
weeding policies.

In my opinion, the worst enemy of books have been the
librarians
themselves, who in the past regularly defaced books by
tearing out
the title page when discarding a book, and who often put
numerous
library ink stamps on plates, etc. This kind of stuff is
still going on.
A library may discard a book because no one refers to it for
many years.
Some times it is a rare book but the librarian is not aware
of it.
I have seen this many many times.
