Lecture by Jim Croft



Minnesota Center for Book Arts will host Jim Croft, guest lecturer and
instructor on June 3.  Lecture information as follows.

Making a Book From the Ground Up
Lecturer: Jim Croft
Saturday, June 3, 7-8:30 PM
Location: MCBA studios
Fee: Free

Jim Croft, of Santa, Idaho, will discuss his techniques of creating a book
from raw materials, using traditional tools and methods, and utilizing loca=
l
and home-grown materials.  Of the many steps involved, he will focus on how
he makes thread and cord from hemp and flax fibers,  paper, wooden covers,
and creates brass clasps.  Croft will demonstrate how to spin thread with
hemp and flax; participants will have the option to make their own thread.
He will also have a selection of his own beautiful handmade book binding
tools, many made of elk bone and lignum vitae, on hand for viewing and/or
purchasing.

Jim Croft and his wife Melody have been practicing traditional hand
technologies, especially those used in working with fiber and wood, since
1970.  Croft=B9s interests in sustaining and rediscovering the best historic
structures, with a focus on recycling and using local and homegrown
