Palisades Artist Book Workshops for Summer 2000 are:

Sculptural Books with Kumi Korf on Sunday 30 July. Participants in this
workshop
will create a three-dimensional box-like book which will provide the stage for
an event or narrative. During the class, we will explore choice of materials,
spatial arrangements, structure and architectural details to create an
alchemical environment, allowing the mundane to achieve iconic importance.
Students are encouraged to bring two and three-dimensional collage materials,
such as photographs, handmade paper, printed paper, found objects and natural
materials. Materials fee: $20. (Korf studied architecture in her native Japan
and practices as an artist in Ithaca, New York. She is nationally known.)

Archeology of the Book with Gloria Helfgott. Sunday 13 August.
Based on the concepts of previously developed book forms, students in this
workshop will explore and develop ideas for new and unusual book structures.
Using creative impulses, eclectic materials, experimentation and feedback,
techniques demonstrated and experienced, we will build several new book
surprises. This class looks to challenge your assumptions about the nature of
the book. Materials fee: $15.

22 Variations on Accordion-Fold Books with Gloria Helfgott. Sunday 27 August.
Hands-on exploration and development of ideas for artist's books using the
versatile form of the accordion-fold will be the subject of this workshop.
Accordion-fold books require a minimum of materials and equipment and allow
experienced and inexperienced persons to create innovative structures by
folding paper in various ways. Participants will be shown how to fold and
score paper, how to incorporate multifolds into unusual formats and how to make
a book into a sculptural object. Different styles of covers will be made so
that several structures can be completed. Materials fee: $15.

Helfgott has her works in major collections. A painter/printmaker with a
degree from Cooper Union and Penn State now uses the book as her art form. .
She has curated exhibitions, most recently at San Francisco Center for the
Book. The classes are held in her studio at 869 Via de la Paz, Unit D, Pacific
Palisades, CA 90272.

Cost per workshop is $75.00. Class size is limited to 6 persons so please
register early to be sure of a place. Call (310)230-0155.
