Re: ancient Venetian binding



Maybe it's so called "tacketted" binding? The strips of wet parchment or
tawed leather serve as modern staples. It appeared in Europe with the growth
of the universities (i.e. in the 13th century). The limp wrapper of leather
or parchment would serve as a cover. Cheap and fast and therefore popular
among students.
