Also make a blind impression first, then the gold. It doesn't need to be
deep, but should be the depth you want. Different foils will react
differently as well. Color foils tend to require more heat than real gold...

Ann is right about lowering the temp too and working your way up. Many
people have it set far too high. That alone can cause a really muddy
impression, and the longer the dwell and harder the pressure, the worse it
gets.

Bill Minter did a good presentation on this at Standards years ago and has
some really good ideas
