David Gentleman is one of Britain=92s leading artists and designers. His wor=
k=20
is wide-ranging and includes lithographs, watercolours and many outstanding=20
designs for postage stamps, company logos, press advertisements and murals.=20
His own books of watercolours and drawings of countries and places around th=
e=20
world reveal a passionate feeling and interest in architecture and the=20
landscape.

This is the first collection of David Gentleman=92s engravings to be publish=
ed.=20
The book contains some 300 wood engravings and includes book illustrations=20
from early books done while a student at the Royal College of Art to the=20
well-known engravings for Clare=92s The Shepherd=92s Calendar and twenty-fiv=
e=20
engravings from The Swiss Family Robinson which was only published in=20
America; designs for postage stamps, press advertisements, book covers, and=20
all the engravings from the Charing Cross Underground mural. With only a few=
=20
exceptions the engravings are printed directly from the artist=92s original=20
wood blocks.=20

Fiona MacCarthy, best known for her biographies of Eric Gill and William=20
Morris, contributes an Introduction which describes David Gentleman=92s=20
upbringing and training and reveals the influences on his work. She reviews=20
his work not only as a wood engraver but also as an artist and designer,=20
acknowledging his unique creative skills and sensitivity and the importance=20
of this work in the context of modern British wood engraving.

David Gentleman adds his own introduction =91Engraving on wood=92 and a=20
descriptive commentary on each group of engravings.=20

Set in Baskerville and printed on Zerkall mould made paper in a limited=20
edition of 350 numbered copies. Bound in full black buckram, with a=20
cloth-covered slipcase.
