The Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies (ORB) Online Encyclopedia has
a couple of good essays by Richard W. Clement on Medieval and Renaissance
Book Production.  His citation list might also give you some good places to
look for illustrations of early bookbinding tools.  Found here:
