The Fire Proof Box: A workshop by Dominic Riley || Altadena, California || January 19-21

WORKSHOP: FIRE-PROOF BOX Dominic Riley will be conducting a 2 1/2 day
workshop, January 19 (evening) 20, 21 at Kater-Crafts in Pico Rivera with a
slide lecture on the first night at Alice Vaughan's house in Altadena. The
cost will be $155.00 for Guild members, plus a $10 materials fee. For more
info, contact Alice Vaughan (ahv53@aol.com).

History: The fire-proof box is the ultimate in Victorian bookbinding
craftsmanship. Made first by Joseph Zaehnsdorf fot Quaritch, the London
bookseller, its fire-resistant qualities became legend after the great fire
at Riviere's, when those bindings already put in their boxes survived the
blaze, while those waiting to be boxed perished. The structure is fairly
straight forward and comes out of the fancy leather goods trade, resembling
cigar and spectacle cases.

Dominic Riley trained in Bookbinding at the London College of Printing, and
after brief stints at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Shepherds
Bookbinders, came to the United States. He practices book restoration in
Oakland, and teaches at the San Francisco Center for the Book.
