2000 Florida Artists' Book Prize Award Winner & Exhibition

THE FLORIDA CENTER FOR THE BOOK

are pleased to annouce of the 2000 Florida Artists' Book Prize of $2,000 aw=
ard winner:

Thery McKinney, a resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and a graduate of Flo=
rida State University with a B.A. in Fine Arts, is this year's winner. She =
is a relatively new book artist but for many years has worked as a painter =
and calligrapher. Her winning book is entitled: A to Z: 26 Ways to Art ([31=
] leaves; 17 x 22 x 6 cm.)  It is a homage to the 26 artists (from Joseph A=
lbers to Larry Zox) who inspired her to create an initial with the letter o=
f the artists' last names. Each artist is someone who she enjoyed researchi=
ng and who prompted her to 'copy' his/her style.  In an edition of five, th=
e book is hand-bound in cloth with accordion-style spine and was produced u=
sing an assortment of fine papers including Arches, Somerset, Saunders and =
Japanese rice papers. The hand-marbled endpapers were especially created by=
 the aritst/author. Each alphabetic letter utilized additional materials an=
d papers. The text was computer generated in Times New Roman 10 point type.

The Florida Artists' Book Prize was established in 1997. Serving on the jur=
y this fourth year of the competition were: Ruth & Marvin Sackner of the Sa=
ckner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry (Miami Beach); Mata & Arthur Ja=
ffe, whose collection of Books As Aesthetic Objects was recently given to t=
he Library of Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton); and Bonnie Clearwat=
er, Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art (North Miami).

The prize-winning book and 29 other entries will be on exhibit in the Biene=
s Center's galleries beginning February 15th and running through March 19th=
, 2001.  The award ceremony will be held on March 14th, 2001, from 6 to 8 p=
.m. in the Bienes Center.=20
