POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT || Assistant Conservator, Special Collections Department, Syracuse University Library



ASSISTANT CONSERVATOR, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT
SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Conservator is responsible for the conservation treatment of
rare and unique items from the Library's Department of Special Collections
in a production setting. This individual will work in accordance with
accepted professional standards. In consultation with the Conservator, the
Assistant Conservator will identify and determine the condition and
treatment of rare and unique items. Other duties include: assisting the
Conservator in planning and organizing unit activities; surveying
collections; identifying treatment options for materials selected for
conservation; maintaining tools and equipment. They will also assist with
environmental monitoring and disaster response/recovery activities.
The Assistant Conservator will also be responsible for the day-to-day
training/supervision of work study students (approximately 30 hrs/wk),
including providing input into the student hiring/evaluation process;
establishing production goals, assigning work, determining treatment
procedures, and ensuring quality control of student work. Will also
maintain work study student schedules, time sheets, and statistics.
The Assistant Conservator will assist the Conservator and Preservation
Administrator with developing and presenting preservation education
workshops for both within the Library and with local/regional
organizations. They can also serve on Library and other committees if called.

REQUIREMENTS
Masters degree in conservation from an accredited program, with
demonstrated post-graduate experience working in an academic library
environment, or a bachelors degree and a comparable equivalent combination
of experience earned through study at a program such as the North Bennet
Street School / apprenticeship with a qualified conservator. The applicant
will also have demonstrated attendance at workshops imparting both
theoretical and practical knowledge; and work experience, preferably in an
academic library environment. Applicants selected for interview must
present a portfolio of representative conservation treatments and/or
examples of their own work.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
$23,000 - $44,000. The University provides a generous benefits package,
including TIAA/CREF (11% University contribution), health and dental plans,
tuition remission, adoption assistance, insurance, and other work/life
options and benefits.
