Position at the Library of Congress: Collections Care Technician



The Library of Congress invites applications for the permanent position of

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Incumbent at the GS-5 level will use an automated box-making system to
construct custom fitted enclosures for Library materials from the permanent
research collections; prepares materials for enclosure; removes materials
from acid binders or containers and places them in appropriate protective
enclosures; performs basic repairs such as tipping-in or repair paper,
using heat-set tissue or Japanese paper, constructing pockets to house
accompanying material or tightening hinges; assist in maintaining
cleanliness and order in the repair facility; supports the Library Binding
Section by performing treatments such as stiffening and pamphlet binding;
assure the physical safety of all Library materials assigned for repair or
housing; works in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner; maintain
worksheets on a daily basis; and participates in staff meetings, Library
committees, or task forces. In addition to the duties listed above,
incumbent at the GS-6 level will independently search the Library's on-line
and manual catalogs to verify entry or call number; performs basic and
intermediate repairs such as spine repair, recasing or new covers; handles
RUSH requests; and perform quality assurance as batches of work are
completed.  In addition, incumbent at the GS-7 level will organize teams of
technicians to work in decentralized environments to accomplish housing
projects for particular collections; produce statistics; develop creative
solutions to non-routine problems; assists in making treatment decisions
for housing and repair; assists in the examination of material to determine
condition, develops treatment plans, and estimates cost of treatment;
trains other technicians; assists in conducting use surveys; perform
quality assurance; and may be assigned to direct work flow for housing or
repair activities
