Announcing IMAGE & TEXT III, the third biennial symposium exploring the
interaction of text-based and visual arts,
to be held on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University,
Nacogdoches, Texas, November 1-3, 2001.
Symposium lectures, discussions and workshops will examine how creative
people from diverse backgrounds present
their ideas and images in books and related media (such as digital imagery
and film), and how book and book-like
"structures" affect our reading of these art forms. Art exhibitions and a
fine press book fair will held in conjunction with
the symposium.

SESSIONS This year's symposium will address the broad theme: "The Future:
Past and Present" from both
modern and post-modern perspectives. Sessions include: 1) Structures of
Meaning, Traditional and Innovative, 2)
Imagining the Future: Visiones Latinos, 3) Imagining the Future: British
Visions, and 4) The Page and the Screen:
Redefining the Book in the Information Age.

WORKSHOPS will bring writers and artists together in the creation and
production of two collaborative book projects,
one using hand-set type, the other using photopolymer plates. Daily
demonstrations on many of the various aspects of
printing and the publishing processes being employed will be given. Image
& Text III participants may elect to be
involved in the workshops and creation of the works to whatever degree
desired. (Printing will begin on Oct. 29 and
extend through Nov. 1; binding will take place on Nov. 2-3)

BOOK FAIR Symposium participants are invited to bring works (artist's
books and/or fine press printing or bindings)
for display in a book fair to be held in our secure gallery environment. A
letter of intent to participate in this part of the
Symposium must be received by October 10, 2001.

EXHIBITIONS will include: 1) TEXAS PRINTS, a traveling exhibition
sponsored by the Southern Graphics
Council; 2) works from a Tim Rollins K-12 Workshop; 3) original Vorticist
plates from Wyndham Lewis's
TIMON of ATHENS Portfolio (1913); and 4) selected works from the LaNana
Creek Press.
