The University of Alabama
College of Communication & Informations Sciences
School of Library & Information Studies
M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program
Faculty Position

The School of Library and Information Studies, College of Communication and
Information Sciences, at The University of Alabama invites applications and
nominations for a tenure-earning assistant professor position to begin
August 2002. The primary responsibilities of this position will be in
teaching bookbinding and book structures courses in the 60-credit hour,
accredited M.F.A. in the Book Arts Program.

Qualifications: An M.F.A. and teaching experience are preferred.

Responsibilities: Applicants should have a wide variety of bookbinding
experience, including strong bench skills, and the ability and desire to
teach graduate-level courses in a number of the following areas: edition
binding, boxmaking, decorative paper techniques, historical and alternative
binding structures, and leather/vellum work. Other related areas of
expertise, such as conservation, are desirable. Because an integrated
approach to teaching the whole book is an important aspect of the program,
applicants should be interested in synergy between the pro-gram areas of
bookbinding, history of the book, papermaking, and printing. In addition to
teaching, the successful applicant will be expected to pursue creative
activity, advise students, serve on faculty committees, and participate
collegially as one of twelve SLIS faculty members.

Compensation: Negotiable based upon experience, for a nine-month
appointment, with a generous benefits package.

AA/EOE: Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Environment: The historic University of Alabama campus is located near the
Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa, an area of some 150,000 people, and is a
comfortable drive to Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans,
the Gulf Coast, and the Great Smoky Mountains. Tuscaloosa's business
community is diverse and enjoys a strong cooperative relationship with the
University. Major employers include the JVC Corporation and Mercedes Benz,
among others, and a thriving commercial and financial climate make the
University and its environs particularly attractive. There is an active
arts community and a rich history, enhanced by diverse cultural and
recreational opportunities.
