Scaling digital fonts

 Letterpress printers have no choice but to accept the aesthetic
choices in scaling that are made by the designer/foundry.  Digital
typographers can adapt the characteristics of each letter when it is
scaled to suit their own needs. Like anything else, digital typography
can be done well or poorly. Agfa Monotype does a good job with digital
fonts, and so do many others. The scaling of digital fonts has been
very sophisticated in Adobe Type 1 and TrueType systems for years.

Perhaps the printing student John Cutrone refers to simply used
whatever unadjusted output came from the machine in the digital/metal
comparison.

Those familiar with hinting and anti-aliasing can adjust  the
smoothness, proportions and shading as the type is scaled. Each glyph
in a TrueType font is individually hinted.
