POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Preservation Librarian, University of Colorado at Boulder

The faculty director of the Preservation Department reports to the associate
director for Technical Services.  The faculty director holds substantive
responsibility for development and oversight of Libraries policies and
programs regarding preservation of library materials and manages a
department of approximately nine f.t.e. support staff plus student
assistants who perform all phases of physical preparation and preservation
treatment of materials for the Libraries collections, including marking,
mending, binding preparation, pamphlet binding, preservation review,
disposition of materials, and reformatting.  The University Libraries has
recently reorganized Technical Services and is engaged in a library-wide
strategic planning effort.  The Libraries has an active offsite storage
program and is involved in planning for renovation of the current library
building.  This is a tenure-track position.  In keeping with the tenure
standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder, a significant part of
the responsibilities include research and creative work and a commitment to
service.

Required Qualifications:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program by
June 1, 2002.  Three years' experience at the professional or
paraprofessional level in materials preparation, preservation or related
areas; familiarity with library preservation practice, including both
physical and bibliographic aspects; supervisory skills; ability to work
effectively with staff at all levels throughout the organization; planning,
oral, and written communication skills; familiarity with relevant library
automation; potential for scholarly and service contributions.

Desirable Qualifications:  Professional experience in a research library in
materials preparation and preservation; specialized education or training in
preservation; successful planning and implementation of special projects;
experience with any of the following:  commercial binding contracts,
emergency preparedness, environmental control, disaster recovery, off-site
storage projects; familiarity with library automation for bindery functions;
familiarity with digital reformatting techniques; demonstrated achievement
in scholarly and service activities.

Appointment and Salary:  The University of Colorado at Boulder is committed
to diversity and equality in education and employment.  Preference will be
given to candidates at the assistant professor rank, but candidates at all
levels will be considered.  Starting salary range will be $48,000 to
$54,000.  Benefits include 22 working days vacation, 10 paid holidays,
liberal sick leave, University group health care plans, group life
insurance, TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity, and research support.  Tenured
librarians are eligible for sabbatical leaves.
