CHINESE PAPERMAKING
A lecture by Nancy Norton Tomasko

The New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers will sponsor a
presentation on Chinese papermaking by Nancy Norton Tomasko at the Rhode
Island School of Design on November 10, 2001. Nancy will discuss and
show slides of the hand papermaking practices that she has seen over the
past four years in visits to Fuyang in Zhejiang province, to Jingxian in
Anhui province, to Jiajiang in Sichuan, and in Qian'an in Hebei
province. She will bring samples of Chinese papers, tools, and books
made with Chinese paper, along with other assorted materials.

Nancy Norton Tomasko is the editor of The East Asian Library Journal at
Princeton. She has a Ph.D. in Chinese literature and is now doing a
research project on traditional hand papermaking practices in China
today. She has twice taught a course at Bryn Mawr College on the
history of the book in China, in which the students learned to make
traditional Chinese books. She has taught Chinese bookbinding at The
Center for Book Arts in NYC, in various workshops, and this past summer
at Paper and Book Intensive.

This program is free and open to the public.
