Thymol

Before this thread gets out of hand, it is well to remember a couple
of things about thymol.

1) it is the active agent in Listerine mouthwash.

2) it is a moldistat, not a moldicide.

Moldistats/fungistats are chemicals or vapors which halt the growth
of molds/fungi, giving a person extra time to work with the problem.

Under the worst conditions (damp or highly humid environment) the
effect lasts about 2 weeks.

That said, it is also the case that thymol is no longer much used
in conservation treatments because it is a suspected mutagen (important
for those of childbearing age/interest.)
