Letterpress & Book Workshops for 2002

Please note that the schedule of letterpress and book arts workshops from
Ars Brevis Press in Cincinnati has changed slightly. The polymer plate
workshop scheduled for Jan. 5 & 19 has been cancelled. All other dates are
still on at this time.

Seating is limited, so advanced registration is required. Please contact me
via phone or email to register.

Workshop Schedule =80 Winter, 2001-2002

Introduction to Letterpress: Simple Books (Weekend workshop)
Learn the basics of typesetting, letterpress printing and basic bookbinding=
.
You will be able to plan, design, print and bind a simple book. No prior
letterpress or bookbinding experience required. Class limit =3D 5. Fee =3D $100
+ materials.* This workshop runs both Saturday and Sunday, with two session=
s
to choose from:
Feb. 23-24, 1-5pm


Introduction to Letterpress: Greeting Cards, Business Cards or Broadsides
(Weekend workshop)
Learn the basics of typesetting, working with images and printing simple
jobs such as greeting cards (including wedding invitations), business cards
or broadsides (small prints). No prior letterpress experience required.
Class limit =3D 5. Fee =3D $100 + materials This workshop runs both Saturday an=
d
Sunday, with two sessions to choose from: Feb. 2-3, 1-5pm or Feb. 16-17,
1-5pm


Letterpress Printing with Photo-polymer Plates (Runs two Saturdays)
The use of photo-polymer plates allows you to create letterpress designs on
the computer or by hand, or a combination of both. Prior knowledge of
letterpress printing and computer typesetting is encouraged. The first day
will be spent learning the basics of how these plates work, including a
variety of a hand techniques as well as scanning and set-up of computer
files for polymer output. Then we=B9ll order the plates and be ready to print
at the next meeting. Class limit =3D 5. Fee =3D $100 + materials* Jan. 5 & 19,
1-5pm or Jan 26 & Feb. 9, 1-5pm


Letterpress/Bookbinding Intensive with Katie Harper & Gabrielle Fox (Two
Weekends)
This two weekend workshop goes beyond the fundamentals for those who wish t=
o
create more sophisticated editioned letterpress book projects. The first
weekend is devoted to design and printing the book, and the second weekend
to binding. Prior knowledge of design, printing and binding is encouraged.
Class limit: 6; Fee: $250
Jan. 12-13, from 10-5pm for printing and Jan. 19-20, from 10-4pm


The Digital Book: Designing and Printing Books on a Computer (One-day
Workshop)
Electronic technologies have created a revolution in publishing, giving the
power of the printing press to just about everyone who has access to a
computer. But there are many tips and tricks that can help you make you
design books (and other projects) that have a more professional look. We=B9ll
cover materials and design, as well as working with photographs (digital an=
d
silver), scanning, typography, page layout and printing options. Perfect fo=
r
graphic designers, writers, photographers and others who want to spiff up
their own books or other publications. Computer access is required, but no
prior design or printing experience is necessary. Class limit: 5;
Fee =3D $75 + materials.*

be refunded if the workshop is cancelled, or if participants cancel at leas=

2 weeks before the workshop.

*Materials costs will vary depending on the project. Workshop fees
discounted 10% for Cincinnati Book Arts Society members.
