VISUAL STUDIES WORKSHOP
ANNOUNCES WEEKEND WORKSHOP

COPTIC BOOKBINDINGS SCOTT McCARNEY
Saturday and Sunday: February 2-3; 9:30-4:30

This weekend workshop will introduce participants to one of the earliest
known, multi-sectioned, unsupported sewn structures for bookbinding.
Coptic bindings are suitable for binding a variety of papers, and even
board, into miniature to elephantine sized books. They are sturdy enough
for a rough-and-tumble travel journal and elegant enough for a small
edition press binding. We will specifically make samples of a one-needle
coptic sewn along the spine; a two-needle coptic sewn along the spine;
and an innovative coptic devised for sewing single sheets rather than
folded folios (perfect for computer-generated books). We will thoroughly
demonstrate basics of bookbinding tools, materials, and procedures. No
previous bookbinding experience is necessary.

SCOTT McCARNEY is an artist/designer who makes one-of-a-kind and
editioned books integrating physical structures of bindings with book
design. The past year was a busy one: he completed a second
lecture/teaching tour of Australia in the spring, received a Saltonstall
Fellowship for Photography, and was honored with a retrospective
exhibition at the Arts of the Book Collection at Yale University.
