Magic Books or Now You See It, Now You Don't - Emily J. Martin
Join this workshop which will be exploring a number of book structures
that have elements that appear and disappear when the structures are
manipulated.
Various books ranging from single sheet to 2 and 3 dimensional flexagons
to magic walls and Jacob's Ladders will be presented.  Students will make
models as well as construct their own individual examples using their own
drawings, decorated papers, photographs, rubber stamps, collages, etc.

Emily J. Martin has been making books since the late 70s. Her work is
found in private and public collections throughout the US and
internationally including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The Tate
Britain in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.  She
currently teaches at the University of Iowa Center for the Book and in
workshops around the in workshops around the country. This is her first
visit to Maine.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Maine Crafts Association invites you to take a break from your busy
schedule and immerse yourself in one of these short but intense workshops
at the fabled Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on the Down East coast
of Deer Isle, Maine.  Not only will you study with one of the country's
leading craft artists, but you will have the opportunity of meeting with
your peers and sharing experiences in an unparalleled learning
environment. And, if you bring up to five slides, you can share your own
work during Friday evening's
slide presentation.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Applications should be received no later than April 13. Please note that
space in each workshop is limited and registrations are accepted on a
first come, first served basis. A nonrefundable deposit of $75 will hold
a space until April 13, when the balance will be due. Accommodations are
assigned randomly, so it is advisable to register early. Students will
receive a confirmation letter which will include a list of workshop
supplies needed as well as general information about Haystack. Room
assignments will be available on arrival.

FEES
The cost per person is $300 for MCA members and $350 for non-members,
which includes a one year general membership. The fee includes tuition,
room, board, and basic tools.  Materials and studio fees are required for
most workshops and are collected in class. Fees vary according to the
number of students and the amount of materials used. Workshop
confirmations will include fee information.

REFUNDS
A refund for a cancellation, less $25, is possible until April 13.
However no refunds will be made after that date unless there is a waiting
list for that workshop and the space can be filled.
