Concerning the term "ply"--a four-ply thread is composed of four separate
threads that have been twisted around each other. Using four threads as
one, that is, putting four threads through the needle and handling as one,
does not constitute a ply, four or otherwise. If you were to ply the four
threads, the result would be very strong, and you wouldn't run the risk of
having one or more of the four abrade and break. Just a picky, picky point
to consider.
