CALLIGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS - AND THE REST OF US
May 20-23
Saltwinds Yankee Barn, Kingston, MA
dherlihy@tiac.net
(781) 585-5622

Instructor: Paul T Werner, PhD

This is a beginner's course in calligraphy - and we're all beginners.
We will study the Italic alphabet as the best foundation for ALL
alphabets. Through practice, slide lectures and demonstrations,
students will learn to analyze lettering styles, including Arabic and
Hebrew. They will be introduced to the history and theory of writing,
and to the use of quill pens. Most important, they will learn to
balance the discipline and knowledge of writing with the emotional,
aesthetic and intellectual depth of an art form.

Finally, they will learn to understand the interaction of letter forms
and muscle function - an interaction which explains the history of
writing, underlies its aesthetics, and allows an intelligent approach
to learning and practice.
