Dear Cal:

I offer a little bit of info regarding Polyvinyl Acetate Adhesive
(PVA) from a bookbinding prospective.

Some are better, in an archival sense, than others.

Specifically, these would be "emulsion copolymers of internally
plasticized polyvinyl acetate adhesives that are flexible and will
not cross link after long term aging". Most of these types of
adhesives are considered non acidic or pH neutral.

The Library Binding Institute (LBI) has done an enormous amount of
research on bookbinding adhesives for its "Standard for Library
Binding" adopted by the American National Standards Institute as a
National standard and now called the "ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39.78-2000
Standard" which is available from NISO Press (www.niso.org).You may
also be able to obtain a copy from the LBI (www.lbibinders.org).

As to deactivation or "reversability" of PVA and other adhesives, we
do it all the time using heat. Some are more easily removed than
others however.

Steam, using a Jiffy Steamer, works very well. We also occasionally
resort to an electric hot plate with a solid metal surface above the
heating element.
