Claudine,

You might try this book (out-of-print, but available through Amazon.com):

How to make cloth books for children, by Anne Pellowski. ISBN:
0801983983

It has interesting and simple ideas if you have the time and a sewing
machine. (Instructive b/w photos/illus.,
paperback, 8 1/2" x 11", 90 pp.)

But, truthfully, if you're near a zoo, you must be near a decent bookstore,
(and, of course, Amazon.com is
only a click away). There is an incredible variety of board books, cloth
books, plastic books, rubber books,
wooden books, and probably books made of cheese, for babies. Among those
you should find an endless
assortment with animal themes, many with good color photos. Unless you're
truly interested in making your
own customized keepsake book, you might want to just buy a bunch of these.
